Reproduction

The reproduction services that LAVS offers collection of stallions for A.I. shipping. Tracking and breeding mares with either fresh or frozen semen. At our facilities we have a breeding phantom and reproduction lab for handling and preparing semen. We use ultrasound for tracking and breeding mares but also have resident stallions to encourage the mares to cycle. LAVS foals out mares in our foaling stalls. The mares are monitored 24 hours as the diagnostic tools let us know that she is imminent. LAVS follows the non-stress weaning process and can help you wean your foals also.

Examinations

Our general exams include evaluating feed, condition, vaccination and deworming programs, skin and teeth. The total health of the horse is discussed and all other questions of the horse's health that concern you.

Lameness Examinations

A lameness exam entails trotting the horse on a hard ground in circles and straight lines. LAVS performs flexion and spavin tests. We also use hoof testers for any soreness in the bars, soles or heels of the hoof. Digital radiographs, neurological blocks, will be used for further diagnostic tools.

Prepurchase Exam

The purpose of a prepurchase exam is to determine the medical and physical health of the horse. This is one third of the information that a buyer needs in order to make correct decisions. The three parts are financial, emotional and the veterinary exam. The veterinarian gives the buyer an evaluation of the health of the horse at this time and a projected future of the horse's health and soundness. The exam includes a health exam, lameness exam and digital X-rays if requested.

Radiology

In December 2005 Look Ahead Veterinary Services upgraded to digital X-Rays. Now all x-rays can be downloaded to a disk and sent home with the owners to have for their records. With the advancement in digital each X-ray can be filtered to get a distinct view on soft tissue, organs, dental, and boney detail. Using these filters, the reading of digital X-rays compared to Film leads to more accurate detail for diagnosis.

Surgery

Soft tissue surgery is performed inside either our large animal treatment area or the surgery room. Soft tissue surgery does include colt castrations, hernias, wire cuts, avulsions, colic, and head lacerations.

Medical problems such as colic is best monitored here at LAVS. The laboratory has CBC, chemistry profiles, catheters, fluids and analgesics to give the best evaluation of the problem.

Dentistry

Dentistry is performed at LAVS by a licensed DVM. The dentistry is done by rotary tools with a speculum. The dentistry does include issues concerning alignment, canines, wolf teeth, gum disease and abscess's. The DVM performs the sedation and monitoring of the horse especially in geriatric cases this is important. The horses respond very well to our techniques and get comfortable so the next time they come back there is very little tension.

Other

Other services include echocardiogram of tendons and soft tissue. Endoscopies of the upper airways, urogenital system, and lay-up services if your horse needs special care and housing for a few weeks.
